SIENA. On the penultimate day of the Serie B National Championship, CUS Siena played its last home match against Bologna RC and perhaps its last match in Colle Val d’Elsa by forced choice; in fact, in the next season the Bianconeri would like to return to the renovated Sabbione, leaving the possibility of playing at Valdelsa Rugby’s home only by choice of the two clubs.
The opponent of the day was Bologna RC, third in the standings, two points behind second-placed Colorno, one of the four teams that played at a different level compared to the remaining teams.
In the first leg at home in Bologna, the Sienese had presented themselves with a lineup that had been largely restructured due to injuries and ailments during the season and had only managed to stem their opponents’ maneuvers without managing to score any points; it was a beautiful performance beyond the final result of 38-0.
On this spring day the Cussini once again fielded a restructured formation and took to the field for the first time with captain Carmignani on the bench in the absence of Francesco Romei.
The first half of the game was well managed so much so that the Bolognese scored only once for the 0-5; probably a wrong reading that led CUS Siena to play an absolutely placeable free kick into touch and which would have removed the 0 from Siena’s score.
The second half instead saw a Bologna team that was good at taking advantage of a yellow card given to Totti by scoring two tries in numerical superiority for 0-19 and also scoring the offensive bonus point which set the final result at 0-26.
At Juventus there are several points to complain about, they certainly would have deserved at least one score and one would have expected greater referee attention on the Bolognese’s high tackles, which were almost never sanctioned.
At the end of the match there was a very calm atmosphere both in Bologna and in Siena, obviously these were not the games to win for the Sienese who this season have probably only disappointed in the away match in Gubbio where the result would have been within reach.
Appointment in Colorno next Sunday for the last match of a championship that started as the most difficult for CUS Siena, forced to train and play in Gracciano thanks to the hospitality of Valdelsa Rugby, and proved to be the best in history for the bianconeri with a seventh place and with 45 points scored.
