Flavio Cobolli shines in Madrid: the Roman tennis player overcame Nicolas Jarry for the second time this season and qualified for the third round where he will face a tough nut to crack like the Russian Karen Khachanov. However, this is the first third round of his career at “1000” level which is important both from the point of view of the ranking and from the point of view of qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In the ranking that qualifies for the Olympics (the top four go to Paris) Cobolli occupies the 53rd position with 795 points and is currently the Italian number five behind Luciano Darderi, who would currently be the last Italian to go to the Games, being in 47th position with 861 points.
The situation is more difficult regarding Lorenzo Sonego, who is 58th with 771 points. The Turin native will play this week in Cagliari in the Challenger 175 and, in the event of an early exit at the Italian Internazionali, he will also play in the Turin Challenger, tournaments in which Luciano Darderi is also registered. Precisely these two Challengers could act as a watershed and decide the fourth singles player for the Olympics.
