“I could never go back to coaching him”

It’s not an easy time for a tennis legend like Boris Becker. After having written important pages in this sport, the former German tennis player was sentenced in 2022 to 30 months of prison for fraudulent bankruptcy.

After serving a few months in prison, the German returned home but was unable to return to the United Kingdom. A hard blow for a man who as a player had turned Wimbledon into his second home. In fact, three of his six slam triumphs have arrived on the grass of the All England Club, a club in which Becker has seven finals.

The German, former coach of Novak Djokovic and current coach of Holger Runespoke to The Telegraph about his desire to return to Wimbledon, also spending a few words on the period of the current world number one.

The words of Boris Becker

Becker intends to return to Wimbledon, but to be able to go the German needs permission from the Ministry of the Interior, which he will try to obtain next year: “I miss Wimbledon, obviously.

It’s my favorite tournament, the most important. I am working on all fronts to return next year, in 2025. It is an option, but let’s see who I will work for there, because I cannot be in the country yet.”

The process in some cases takes more than 10 years, but the 56-year-old is confident he can get the permit. “10 years without returning to the UK is nonsense. After October 2024 I can get permission from the Home Office.

They decide, not me” declared Becker. The German then denied the possibility of returning to coach Novak Djokovic. “I think at the moment he is looking for something different. I’m not sure he knows exactly what he is.

He will always be a dear friend of mine, we always talk about tennis, but I couldn’t go back to coaching him because I already did. It would be a step backwards,” explained the 6-time slam champion. Becker finally concluded by commenting on the Serbian’s choice not to take part in the Master 1000 in Madrid: “I was surprised by his decision in Madrid.

I think at this stage he needs matches, competition. But he has his commitments. I think winning gold for Serbia at the Paris Olympics is his main goal, so maybe it’s already planning to be fresh for July. This could be a reason.”
