Andrea Stella explained the reasons that led to the consensual separation between David Sanchez and McLaren after just three months
No later than ten days ago, McLaren had sensationally announced the farewell of David Sanchezwith the French coach who, after having also left Ferrari in 2023, had strengthened the ranks of the Woking team in the role of Technical Director, Car Concept & Performance.
A purchase strongly desired by the English team, which however soon turned into an unhappy marriage, with Andrea Stella who has now returned to the issue, explaining the reasons that led to the consensual separation.
The reasons behind Sanchez’s departure from McLaren
“We all agree that the model itself is very good,” the team principal explained to motorsport.com ”We are very happy to have three directions: aerodynamics, engineering and performance, this works very well.”
”When you have to find the technical setup, you also have to make sure it plays to the individual’s strengths. We spoke with David about this topic and we understood and recognized that his level of seniority, experience and expertise is potentially even higher than the role he held at McLaren.”
Speaking instead of the decision made to separate after just three months, Stella added: ”Tre months in a normal industry are not many, but in Formula 1 they are many. Wait another three months it can put you out of step with working on next year’s car or the work you already have to do for the 2026 car.”
”This also applies to David: to give him the chance to have more important roles elsewhere, three months can make the difference. So, we thought that was the right time and we came to an amicable and amicable conclusion that it was the right thing to do. I really wish him the best for his future.”
McLaren is satisfied with its technical staff
Despite the loss of a valuable coach like Sanchez, However, McLaren feels calm on the technical front, being able to count on other top-level figures, such as Rob Marshall and Peter Prodromou:
“The news about David is a thing of the past. The main news that is relevant for McLaren is that we have an updated and advanced technical configuration, which I believe puts McLaren in an even stronger position than before.”

”The new hires do not only concern some senior figures, but we have added many people in the technical area of McLaren, what we internally call “additional power. What we have done in these first three months has been find the right synthesis between the technical path started last year and this further power”.
As already known, Stella will be the one to temporarily take the position left vacant by the Frenchman and carry out his duties, awaiting the arrival of a new figure who can further support the technical staff.
