Zohran Mamdani officially became the 111th mayor of New York. New York Attorney General Letitia James installed Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, during a small ceremony with his family shortly after midnight. “This is truly the honor and privilege of a lifetime,” socialist Mamdani said during the swearing-in ceremony at the old IRT metro station, which closed in 1945.
Mamdani ran with a pro- public transport and called the station “a testament to the importance of public transportation to the vitality, health and legacy of our city.”
Mamdani took the oath taking hands on two copies of the Koran: one that belonged to his grandfather and the other from the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. «This is not my success. It’s our success. It’s not my administration. It’s our administration. So, it’s not my inauguration. It’s for all of us,” Mamdani added. Expressing confidence, the new mayor of New York said that “we will have the people we need to begin to implement not only our affordability program, but also, frankly, to provide the everyday services that New Yorkers need.”
The ceremony will be followed by a “block party”, the typical New York block parties, at which 4 thousand people are expected, as well as a long series of artists and celebrities from the American left. The next key date at the beginning ofMamdani administration will be January 7, the first day of the 2026 New York state legislative session in Albany.
