The condition of the woman who fled from a community and was also hit by a car is still serious
There is a bitter taste of retaliation, the kind that Dante would have recognized without hesitation, in the human and judicial parable of Angelika Hutter. The woman who two and a half years ago, in Santo Stefano di Cadore, overwhelmed and killed an entire family on a sidewalk, is today suspended between life and death, in an intensive care bed, after having herself been hit by a car. A tragic circle which leaves behind not only the pain of family members who have lost their loved ones, but several questions that cannot be answered.
The accident
La 34enne Angelika Hutter, German designer, was in the health community of Ronco Veronese, where she was serving the sentence for the death of Marco Antonello, 47 years old, her mother-in-law Maria Grazia Zuin, 67 years old, and little Mattia, just two years old. In the afternoon of Sunday 28 December he climbed over the fence of Casa Don Girelli, a psychiatric facility in Ronco Veronese, attempting an escape that lasted only ten minutes. Along provincial road 19 she was hit by a Volvo SUV driven by a 77-year-old from Verona. The impact was very violent. Angelika Hutter is currently hospitalized in the neurosurgical intensive care department of the Confortini Center of the Borgo Trento hospital in Verona. She is sedated, intubated, guarded by the police. He suffered a serious head injury. The medical bulletin speaks of “serious but stable” conditions, without imminent danger to life. Only as the days pass will we be able to see if his condition can improve.
The woman’s profile
But who is Angelika Hutter, whose name is linked to the tragedy that occurred in Santo Stefano di Cadore? On July 6, 2023, he was behind the wheel of a rented Audi. In the center of the town, along Via Udine, he skidded, losing control of the car and crashed onto the pavement where a Venetian family on holiday was walking. Marco Antonello and his mother-in-law Maria Grazia died instantly. Little Mattia, who was in the stroller pushed by his father, was very serious. He was transported by air ambulance to Belluno hospital, but did not survive. The child’s mother was savedElena Potente, wounded in the foot, and her father Lucio, practically unharmed.
The arrival of the police
When help arrived, Angelika was sitting on the sidewalk, in shock. In the car the police found blankets, clothes, bottles of water, vegetables: it seemed he was living in there. She said she was unemployed and was “touring Italy”. A journey that began some time before and of which many gray areas remain. At the end of May 2023 she had been in Bolzano, in the “Twenty” shopping center, where an argument with a shop assistant had required police intervention. She had a hammer in her backpack: she was reported for carrying objects capable of offending. Then the void, until the tragedy of July. “I’m in an abyss, I don’t remember anything,” he told his lawyer, Giuseppe Triolo, from the Giudecca prison. She often cried, very thin, her face hollow, light years away from the photos that showed her smiling. “He feels responsible for having killed three people,” his lawyer explained at the time. In prison her mental condition worsened: deep depression and an attack on other inmates and officers. Compulsory medical treatment was ordered. In the meantime, the psychiatric evaluation ascertained a semi-mental infirmity and the absence of voluntariness in the investment. Toxicological tests excluded the use of alcohol or drugs.
Christmas in Romania then youth in Germany
Born in Romania, raised in Germany after her parents emigrated, Angelika had lived in Alholminga small Bavarian town. Neighbors remember her as a reserved, quiet girl. On Instagram he defined himself as an “artist”: watercolours, multimedia works, hand-decorated furniture. Everything canceled today. In October 2022 something broke: he loaded a mattress into the car and set off towards southern Europe. Her parents found her in January 2023 in Greece. From there, she reached Bolzano where she was reported for having a hammer in her backpack.
The process for lastage
The trial, for what happened in Santo Stefano di Cadore, ended twenty-eight months after that fateful 6 July 2023 with the plea agreement (4 years and 8 months): a reduced sentence, taking into account semi-mental infirmity. In March 2024 the transfer to the psychiatric facility in Ronco Veronese. Until last Sunday, when he tried to escape. But on the escape route she crossed paths with a car that hit her.
