Germany confirms that it is mature enough to aspire to win the tournament it plays at home: after having overwhelmed Scotland, it prevails 2-0 over Hungary, which confirms the decline compared to the splendid path of recent years, and gains early access to the round of 16. Nagelsmann is building a reliable team that obtains the second well-deserved victory at the European Championships, made possible by Musiala’s advantage and Gundogan’s doubling, also author of the first assist. It is a complete Germany, led by the two splendid senators Kroos and Gundogan, who trigger the young lions Wirtz and Musiala, increasingly convincing. The defense is well protected by Rudiger and Tah while the other veteran Neuer is also among the best and agrees with the coach who preferred him to the reliable Ter Stegen. Germany thus dispels a long negative tradition with the Hungarians: in official matches the last success was the famous and talked about world final of 1954 against the extraordinary Hungary of Puskac, Hidegkuti and Kocsis, who in the first phase had overwhelmed them 8- 3.

Other times, but this team, regenerated by Marco Rossi, is doing better than the shock debut against Switzerland, but not enough to overturn the prediction. The Hungarian team, still with zero points, is too unbalanced: fragile in defence, with Orban still in a negative phase, proactive and dangerous up front with Liverpool’s jewel Szoboszlai, well supported by Varga and Sallai. But Nagelsmann’s two mastiffs, Rudiger and Tah, keep good watch. Yet it is Hungary that creates the first emotion at the start, with Neuer ahead of Sallai. Then the attacking jugglers begin to draw football. The false new Havertz creates spaces with his refined technique, Gundogan acts as an attack director at high levels, according to the role designed specifically for him at Man City by Guardiola while Wirtz is less inspired. However, it is the other tightrope walker, Jamal Musiala, who is leading the national team, who in this European Championship is much less smoky than many performances with Bayern. He slips through the Hungarian defenders and in the 22nd minute finds the advantage: Orban clumsily, as with Switzerland, is mocked by Gundogan, and Musiala passes the excellent Gulacsi.

Hungary reacts with Szoboszlai who invents a free kick destined for the top corner, but Neuer has a formidable burst of kidneys and blocks it. Then in the 47th minute there was an equalizer from Varga, but the action was marred by a double offside. In the second half the German superiority becomes overwhelming: Gulacsi saves on Toni Kroos, then in the 21st minute yet another team action leads Mittelstadt to center for Gundogan who finds the corner. Nagelsmann does not want to risk his jewels and gives space to his deep squad: Fullkrug, Sane’ and Emre Can enter, but the ball is always in the feet of Kroos and Gundogan. Kimmich and Sane’ come close to scoring a hat trick. Hungary is almost out, but a victory against Scotland could still give Marco Rossi hope.
