Here is the expansion project of Maxxi at Flaminio

The final project for the expansion of Maxxi, the museum of 21st century arts located in via Guido Reni, in the heart of Flaminio, has been presented. Launched in 2022 when the Foundation was chaired by Giovanna Melandri, two years later Alessandro Giuli took over the helm and the “Great Maxxi” machine began to move. The funding, of 15 million euros, comes from the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Pnrr. Construction will begin in June, which will last approximately three years and conclude in 2027.

The “Grande Maxxi” project is ready

The objective is to expand the structure, which will practically double in size with the creation of a new multifunctional hub. But the objective of the project is not just the addition of square meters: the Maxxi will become a completely “carbon-free” building, sustainable, free of architectural, sensorial and cognitive barriers and self-sufficient from an energy point of view. Furthermore, a 7,200 m2 linear urban park will be created to contribute to improving the microclimate of the quadrant.

Completion of works in 2027

The “Grande Maxxi” masterplan was created by an Italian-French studio, LAN, which won an international competition in 2022. The final project is ready. The pilot construction site will begin in June to experiment with the use of cutting-edge photovoltaic technologies and the entire project will be completed in 2027. The progress of the project was illustrated in a public meeting on Tuesday 14 May by the president of the MAXXI Foundation Alessandro Giuli, by the scientific director of the “Grande Maxxi” Margherita Guccione, by the Capitoline councilor for urban planning Maurizio Veloccia and by the president of the II municipality Francesca Del Bello.

The Flaminio revolution

“Grande Maxxi represents a significant contribution to the urban regeneration of the Flaminio district and the city of Rome – said Giuli -. The first concrete result will be the creation of a new urban park, a green oasis that will replace concrete and contribute to improving the microclimate. Everyone will be able to benefit from it starting from the end of 2025. Today is the first of the many events that will accompany the realization of the project, to involve citizens and make them participate, welcoming their stimuli and proposals”. “It is a project of particular importance for the Flaminio – Del Bello then underlined – which fits into the more general framework of the redevelopment of the neighborhood in which the administration is investing heavily. Starting from the regeneration of the former Guido Reni Barracks, where the Science Museum will be created and from the creation of the urban park in via della XVII Olimpiade up to the intervention of the city of 15 minutes in the area of the Sports Hall. Flaminio is in a phase of great transformation.”
