Just ten months old, died from ingestion bleach. A tragedy that investigators are trying to understand.

The drama shocked Noto, a baroque town half an hour’s drive from Syracuse. The Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to understand what happened in the family’s home, which is located on the outskirts of Noto.

10-month-old girl dies in the Syracuse area

The investigations have been entrusted to the Carabinieri who are gathering the elements to reconstruct what happened. According to what has been ascertained so far, there were the mother, two little brothers and the 10-month-old baby in the apartment. The little girl allegedly came into contact with a bucket inside which there was a rag immersed in water and bleach.

What happened

What actually happened, whether she put her head in or the bucket ended up on her while she was crawling is the puzzle that the police are trying to solve. It is certain, however, that the little girl ingested water with bleach. As soon as the mother noticed it, she screamed in desperation, drawing the attention of the neighbors who immediately rushed to her aid. To speed up the rescue they decided not to wait for the ambulance to arrive and to take the child to the Trigona hospital which is located not far from the family’s home. The little girl was immediately transported to the emergency room of the hospital where she was placed under the care of the doctors.

It is likely that she arrived already unconscious and immediately afterwards her little heart would have stopped beating. The military personnel questioned the family members who are in shock over the tragedy. They carried out measurements inside the apartment to try to accurately reconstruct the dynamics of what appears to be a fatal domestic accident. «A mourning for the whole city. We are waiting for the evolution of the investigators’ investigations: it is a great pain for all of us and as a father I mourn this loss which creates a great void”, says the mayor of Noto, Corrado Figura.
