Pedro Sanchez remains at the helm of the Spanish government. The head of the executive spoke to the Nation after the right-wing union’s complaint Manos Limpias who accused his wife Begona Gomez Of corruption And influence trafficking. A complaint that gave rise to a preliminary investigation to establish whether there were elements to include the woman in the register of suspects, even if the prosecutors have already urged the judges to archive.

The Spanish Prime Minister, in his speech from Moncloa which does not foresee questions from the press, lashed out at “i bullies who are employed in the art of defamation“, of a persecution that has been going on for years against anyone who has contact with him: “My wife and I – he said – know that this discredit campaign it won’t stop, we’ve been suffering it for ten years. She is Grave”. Sanchez then expressed appreciation for “the solidarity and empathy that has arrived from everywhere.” What happened, he added, goes beyond the political debate, it goes “beyond the rules“. Resigning would have meant giving in to those who try to throw mud on her person and her family, she explained. It is for this reason, she added, that she instead decided to move forward with “even more strength”.

“I have decided to move forward with more force at the helm of the Spanish government,” began Sanchez, explaining that he had already announced his decision at King Felipe VIafter five days of suspense for “a pause for reflection” in which he withdrew from public life, after an “unprecedented” campaign launched by the right and far right against his wife, aimed, according to him, “at destroy him and his government“. “This isn’t about the fate of a particular manager – he explained – It’s about understanding what kind of company we want to be. Our country needs this reflection. We have left the world too long ago mud contaminate our political life”, added the socialist prime minister who in his institutional message did not refer to a possible one motion of confidence on his progressive coalition government.

After the opening of the investigation, Sanchez announced, in a letter to citizens posted on Wednesday on pause for reflection who left the country waiting to know his political fate. “It is urgent for me to answer the question of whether it is worth it, despite the quagmire into which the far right claims to transform politics. If I have to continue leading the government or give up this great honor,” the prime minister wrote in the letter. “I don’t blush to say it, I am a man deeply in love with my wife, who lives helplessly with the mud that they throw on her every day”.

Over the weekend, then, he received demonstrations of support both from the Federal Committee of his party and from thousands of demonstrators mobilized in front of the headquarters of the Psoe and to the Congress of Deputies. Sanchez thus thanked “for the demonstrations of solidarity”. And he assured that his decision to stay represents “a full stop”, to “demand unconditional resistance” against the mud machine driven by the right and “place the focus on the victims and not on the attackers”. “This campaign of discredit will not end – said the prime minister – But we can win it”.
