The winter that doesn’t want to leave us and an early summer that has surprised everyone: this is what is characterizing the current spring season, making it particularly unpredictable. After days of unusual heat for the period, the cold has returned to be felt in many regions, with summer likely to return as early as the weekend. These climatic changes are not only a nuisance for those who have to choose what to wear every day, but they also represent fertile ground for respiratory viruseswhich find in these conditions the ideal place to proliferate. Fabrizio Pregliasco, a virologist at the University of Milan, confirms that these temperature changes are helping to prolong the flu season well beyond its usual time limits. In an interview given to Adnkronos Salute, Dr. Pregliasco underlined how the alternation between heat and cold has prevented a significant decline in the curve of flu-like syndromes, expected in about three weeks, therefore already well into May.
The doctor’s warning
«The flu and Covid are still there, but what dominates – he specifies – are above all viruses “cousins” such as rhinovirus, adenovirus, non-Sars coronavirus and metapneumovirus: those that are protagonists at the beginning and end of the season”. It happens all the time and even more so this year. «It is presumable that weekly cases will remain stable for a while longer, forming a slowly decreasing plateau. Be careful not to underestimate these infectious forms”, warns the doctor. «Especially in fragile people – he warns – they can create problems».
