The University of Southern California has decided to cancel this year’s graduation ceremony scheduled for May 10. The decision is part of the new security measures for the management of the campus, with the pro-Gaza protests becoming increasingly assertive and in some cases violent. Yesterday the police arrested 90 protesters. The graduation ceremony is an event that usually attracts up to 65 thousand people, including relatives and friends of the new graduates. But this year it will not be possible to carry it out: “It is impossible to carry out the checks in time”, explained the academic authorities. USC had already canceled some key moments of the ceremony: among them the speeches of the “first of the class” Asna Tabassun and the honorary graduates, the director Jon Chu and the tennis player Billie Jean King. The situation on American campuses is increasingly delicate. In recent days, the academic authorities of more and more colleges have asked for police intervention to break up the protests which have in many cases become violent and anti-Semitic. Many arrests were made. «We understand that this is disappointing. Nonetheless, we add many new activities and celebrations to make this event academically significant, memorable and unique,” USC said in a statement.
