European Chamber gives green light to the Pact on Migration and Asylum – News

Final green light from the European Chamber for all the texts that make up the new Migration and Asylum Pact. All the legislative acts that make up the set of new rules have passed the test of the House. The EP’s approval must now be followed by the definitive approval of the EU Council made up of 27 member countries. For approval, a qualified majority of member countries will be needed. Green light also given to the legislative framework of the new Pact on migration and asylum which includes mandatory solidarity with migrants (the Asylum and Migration management regulation). Ok to the new asylum procedure, the so-called ‘border procedure’ which provides for an accelerated process, with several exceptions for minors and women, for migrants with a low level of acceptance of protection. The green light came with 301 votes in favour, 269 against and 51 abstentions and was followed by protests from the guest public present in the Chamber. Protests applauded by the EU Left. It is one of the texts of the Migration and Asylum Pact.

Metsola, with the Pact on Migrants the EU has made history – “We have made history, we have created a solid legislative framework to manage migration and asylum in the EU. More than ten years of work have passed. But we have kept our word, and found a balance between solidarity and responsibility. This is the European way.” The president of the European Chamber, Roberta Metsola, said this on X at the end of the vote in the EP on the Pact for Migration and Asylum.

Pd: ‘We are against the Pact on migrants, it is harmful for Italy’ “Today we voted against the agreement on the Pact on Migration and Asylum because the compromise reached is characterized not only by serious and unacceptable shortcomings in terms of human rights but also from the point of view of Italy’s specific interests”. This is what the delegation of PD MEPs to the European Parliament declared in a note. “It is not the overcoming of the Dublin system for which we have worked in recent years, which should have lightened the pressure on the countries of first entry, it does not strengthen the European asylum system in a satisfactory manner and is strongly based on a security approach in the management of the migratory phenomenon. Reflections shared by all the main non-governmental organizations and associations dealing with reception and human rights, and by the many citizens who have expressed their complete opposition to this agreement”, explain the Dem MEPs. “The introduction of the concept of ‘safe third country’ closes the doors of any examination of the merits of the requests for thousands of people. Finally, the Crisis regulation introduces the concept of exploitation which creates a derogation from the general system of management of migration and asylum by also indirectly affecting NGOs with clear risks of repercussions for the criminalization of solidarity. Supporting the Migration Pact in this form would have meant accepting a system that we consider unfair also for the sharing of solidarity for the next decades. Instead, we will continue to fight for a ‘Europe in solidarity with people and between countries’, concludes the Pd delegation.

EU Socialists, ‘the Pact on migrants is a real step forward’ – “The Pact on Migration represents a real step forward. Today is an opportunity to demonstrate that common solutions on migration and asylum are possible. With today’s final vote we can overcome ad hoc responses to the crisis and put in place permanent and sustainable solutions that all governments can rely on.” The EU Socialists group says this via X while the European Chamber is preparing to vote on the texts that make up the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.
