Warm thunderstorms

This weekend will mark the peak of the first African heat wave of the season, with temperatures that will widely rise above 30°C and peaks that could reach 35-38°C in the southern regions. However, the weekend will not only be characterized by heat; there will also be thunderstorms in some areas of the North.

Saturday will be a summer day across much of Italy, with the exception of Alpine areas where afternoon showers are expected. Temperatures will remain high, with peaks of 34-35°C especially in the southern regions, such as Sicily and Puglia, and in the internal areas of Sardinia.

The African anticyclone will begin to show signs of weakening in Northern Italy on Sunday, due to the approach of an Atlantic disturbance. This change will lead to an increase in atmospheric instability, with even strong thunderstorms initially hitting the North-West and then moving towards the North-East during the day. Clouds also increasing in the Center with some phenomena here and there by evening, situation unchanged elsewhere.

Temperatures in the North will drop compared to previous days. Despite that, over the rest of Italy, and in particular in the Centre-South, the African heat will continue to dominate, maintaining temperatures high and above seasonal averages.
