For a successful barbecue you need a lot of patience and all those distractions that allow that patience not to run out. In this context, everyone has their own tricks: salami, Pringles, chatter, bruschetta, a fridge in the garage full of beers, and so on.
Well, King Of None are the musical equivalent of everything that sits on the table waiting for the grill attendant to give his approval to the guests. Having shed their overly obsequious role as apostles of the verb Kyuss (as evidenced by the first album “Weightless Waters”), the five Finnish musicians present themselves with a work that significantly broadens their baggage of influences, without however abandoning the stoner path that marked his career.
“In The Realm” successfully makes use of the experience of Argonauta Records and producer Brad Boatright (Audiosiege) in this field, to color nine songs with solid writing with new nuances, starting from the initial “Speeder Approaching” (wisely chosen as first single), hard rock with a refrain from the best Monster Trucks that introduces the subsequent “Low’n’Slow”, where a minimal and pop melody passes through a formidable mix of guitars created by Aleksi Kärkkäinen and Juha Pääkkö. Miiro Kärki, for his part, proves to be a versatile voice, capable of moving with ease from a caressing timbre (“Thousand Light Year Stare”, an electric ballad that could rightfully belong to the Alice In Chains repertoire) to a more biting one (” DPD”, the only piece that still shows links with Kyuss), while the origins of the band can be perceived at the end of the album with “The Man Who Bought the Multiverse” (an applause for the title) which touches on the stoner doom of Windhand and “Crab Nebula”, where the Spiritual Beggars are honored.
Among the best pieces of an already more than satisfactory album, “Lizard For Brain” stands out, an amazing hard blues hanging from the beards of ZZ Top, and “For The Ride”, a small sample of desert hard rock that John Garcia would have sung with pleasure.
Ultimately, “In The Realm” is destined to become one of the favorite records of 2024 among fans of the genre, and will manage to win the sympathy of those who happen to hear its songs, in deceiving the cooking time of a rib.
