“I’m a thief, I’ll rob you of a beso in Rome”. No, this is not the new motto of the Northern League. And the slogans coined at the end of the 90s by Umberto Bossi have nothing to do with it. It’s just the lyrics to the new single by Luis Fonsi with Laura Pausini entitled “Roma” which tells the story of two ex-boyfriends who see each other again in the eternal city after a long time. The two meet again in the summer in a bar and at that moment they understand that the love that bound them has never ended.
Why is Rome a thieves?
It is a love song, in Spanish. But there are several passages in the text where the word “thief” is used. Which when combined with the title “Roma” immediately made us think of the old motto of the League. The workhorse of the Carroccio at the end of the 90s led by Umberto Bossi. “Holy war against thieving Rome” shouted the number one of the then Northern League way back in ’99.
Now, 25 years later, Luis Fonsi and Laura Pausini have thought of bringing back the motto of the party now led by Salvini. “De suddenly, I became a thief. I’ll rob you of something in Rome, and I don’t care if it was a mistake.” This is the Spanish text repeated several times. But the translation has no reference to Rome and to that old thought supported by Umberto Bossi. It’s just the word thief, in Spanish. “Suddenly I become a thief. I steal a kiss from you in Rome, but this time it wasn’t by mistake”
