The Beatles’ mystical journey to India

In 1968, the Beatles embarked on a journey that would leave an indelible mark on their music and popular culture. Heading to Rishikesh, at the foot of the Himalayas, they found inspiration for many of the songs on their legendary White Album, including Blackbird, Dear Prudence, Julia and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Airing on Sky Arte on Wednesday 17 April, the documentary The Beatles and India captures this mystical experience, showing how the practice of transcendental meditation and the guidance of guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi profoundly influenced the band. Directorial debut of Indian journalist Ajoy Bose, Assisted by Pete Compton, the 2021 documentary explores the impact India had on the Beatles, but also the Liverpool band’s pioneering role in bridging Indian and Western cultures. Featuring rare archival images, interviews and testimonies, The Beatles and India offers a unique look at how the search for spiritual bliss inspired an extraordinary wave of musical creativity.
