Nanni Moretti is about to return with his new film effort, entitled The Sun of the Future: the date has been revealed. The director himself thought about it, through his Instagram profile, to specify when his return to the big screen will take place, also showing the poster of the film.
His last work behind the camera dates back to two years ago, although it was directed in 2019. We are talking about Three floors Of Nanni Morettipresented in competition at 74th Cannes Film Festival. Now, the famous Italian director is preparing to return with his new film, entitled The Sun of the Future. Just the person concerned announced the release date of the film, surprisingly, through his Instagram profile.
Not much information has been leaked about it, but we do know that the screenplay is written by Nanni Moretti himself, together with Valia Santella, Federica Pontremoli and Francesca Marciano. The Sun of the Future it also brings together a dense international cast, full of well-known faces, local but not only. To embellish the film we will find, in fact, Margherita Buy, Silvio Orlando, Moretti himself, the Frenchman Mathieu Amalric and the Polish Jerzy Stuhr. So here is the release date revealed.

His latest feature film, Three floorsdivided the critics. Acclaimed to Cannes Film Festival in 2021, where he earned an 11-minute standing ovation – though receiving the Palme d’Or it was then Titans by Julia Ducournau – it was the first film by Nanni Moretti not based on an original story. The 2021 film, in fact, was born as a cinematographic transposition of the 2017 novel of the same name, born from the pen of Eshkol Nevo. Precisely for this reason, in fact, by some it has been accepted as the feature film that most differs from the style of the well-known Italian director.
Now, Moretti will be able to make us change his mind, bringing us back into his world thanks to the release of The Sun of the Future. A few hours ago, the famous master of Italian cinema surprisingly announced the imminent theatrical release of the film, which will take place starting from next April 20, 2023. The announcement was also accompanied by the image of the official poster, which does not reveal much more than we already know and shows the names involved in the cast.
What to expect from the film
The plot of the film, which will arrive on the big screen thanks to 01 Distribution, is still shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, Moretti anticipated that it will be a period movie musical. The project will rewind time a few years and will unfold over two decades, between the Fifties and the Seventies. The film will also involve the world of cinema, since the story will be focused on a militant director of the PCI, busy shooting a film. If with the previous project Nanni Moretti chose to rely on a pre-existing subject, with The Sun of the Future the director has moved to the soundstages of Cinecittà, for what is about to be a “complex and expensive” job.
