The trailer for Nolan’s Odyssey contains a serious historical error: here’s what’s wrong

For weeks it has been one of the most discussed topics on the web and hundreds of opinions have been expressed by military history experts. We are talking about the first trailer for “Odyssey”, the next film by Christopher Nolan, which has raised the interest of millions of fans, but also profound reflections.

As much as the trailer is galvanizing and manages to capture the interest of a large number of viewers, it has some historical errors which literally set the discussion on forums and social media ablaze. The most extremists were alleged supporters of historical truthfulness, who saw in the armor worn by the various heroes of the film an affront to the Homeric poems and Greek history.

The prop that created the most scandal was Agamemnon’s helmetaccording to many inspired by Batman’s costume and completely unlikely compared to the costumes present at the time in which the film is set.

In fact, in the Mycenaean era, the technical means to create a similar helmet did not exist, which seems to have been produced in carbon fibre. Not to mention the aesthetics and colors. In fact, the opaque black surface of many armors seen in the trailer is completely anachronistic compared to the reference works, but it is also true that the real Mycenaean armor – of which we have several rediscovered examples – do not have the same scenic impact as the armor designed by the English director.

One of the most famous Mycenaean armor is la panoplia di Dendra (here is an image of him), made with several bronze plates, whose appearance is very different from what one would expect from an Achaean soldier today.

It must be said that even Ulysses’ appearance can be considered wrong, given that Matt Damon – the actor who plays him – he wears generic ancient armorwhich due to the helmet is much more reminiscent of the Roman armor of the early years of the Republic.

Many users have also criticized Nolan’s choice to set some scenes of the Odyssey far from the regions where the events are traditionally believed to have taken place – although this is not entirely true, given that most of the external sets were found in Sicily, Tunisia and Greece – while others have criticized the photography, deemed too cold and similar to the Dark Knight trilogy.

However, it must also be reiterated that many experts in classical literature and ancient history have supported Nolan’s work, explaining that having reached theyet another transposition of the Odyssey what interests the general public and critics is not the slavish repetition of the events narrated in the poem, but the artistic vision of the director, who in his freedom decided to make aesthetic changes to the work to make it his own.

We too are of this opinion, also aware that since it is a mythical work – we could also define it as fantasy – l‘Odyssey lends itself better to new interpretations compared to films that talk about real events.

This is the big difference that can be found between Nolan’s next work and Ridley Scott’s film “Napoleon”, with which it is often compared. Scott’s mistake consisted in altering the historical reality of the events, to present his critical version of the character of the French emperorhistorically misunderstood (and often reviled) by authors of British origin.

In Nolan’s work, however, it will not be the costumes that explain the director’s intentions, but his entire creative vision. To judge the quality of this film we will have to wait for the summer, when the film arrives in cinemas.
