Considering that the Marvel universe is currently struggling with the Multiverse and all that it entails, the actor’s suggestion would likely point to one of its variants scattered across the timelines. A possibility evaluated by Robert Downey Jr but which, according to the Russo brothers who directed Avengers: Endgame, it’s not all that feasible. Joe and Anthony Russo they commented on Robert Downey Jr’s recent statements and reflected on the hero’s death in Endgame, a painful passage that created a rift between the Avengers.

Iron Man sacrifices himself for the good of humanity in Avengers: Endgame. In order to stop Thanos, he wears the glove with the infinity stones, sacrificing himself for a greater good. Having therefore eliminated some of the strongest characters in the MCU, Phase 5 is trying to expand its team of heroes by creating new ones, including new ones. After Robert Downey Jr’s recent comments on the potential return of Iron Man, the directors of Avengers: Endgame have also expressed their opinion. In an interview with GamesRadar, they admitted that bringing Iron Man back would be a huge undertaking and that they wouldn’t even know where to start. The reason? Tony Stark’s farewell was always thought of as definitive from the beginning.
Anthony Russo: I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the path would be to get to that point.
Joe Russo: I mean, we closed that book so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it.
It is also true that, to date, Marvel Studios has not announced the return of Iron Man, so they may not have yet considered a recovery plan for the character. However, given the actor’s availability, the Studios could certainly evaluate his involvement in the Multiverse. There is certainly no shortage of opportunities.
