It’s not just critics who have acclaimed Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s new film.

As soon as it was released in cinemas, the film also received enthusiastic comments from directors such as Ryan Johnson and Edgar Wright.

The director of Dinner with crime he wrote on Twitter:

I loved, LOVED Challengers. I didn’t know what to expect, and I left the theater totally excited. It’s an intelligent and sophisticated film, but also crackling and propulsive, it’s practically Match Four applied to a very badass sports film. Seriously: it’s REALLY GOOD.

The director of Baby Drivers instead he wrote on Instagram:

My friend Luca Guadagnino has a grand slam of a movie finally coming out in theaters this week and it’s pretty awesome. Go see the sexy, funny and addictive Challengers, with a formidable trio of Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist setting the screen ablaze. You will like it very much! Almost as good as this photo of me looking like Luca’s 8 year old nephew. (*I don’t understand anything about tennis)

Paul Schrader was more lukewarm, criticizing the length of the film but also praising the cast:

Challengers. Zendaya is a star, the movie is stylish and cool, but why does it have to be 131 minutes? It’s clearly a 100 minute film. (Dargis mentions Game Four in his interview with the NYT, which lasted 91 minutes.) The studios would never have allowed this dry story to last so long – but after all, studios don’t make movies like this anymore.
