Mickey Mouse, the horror film inspired by Steamboat Willie is coming: here’s when it will be released

The first of the Horror movie about Mickey Mouse announced in January 2024, when the Disney character officially became in the public domain.

The film will be titled Screamboata play on the short film’s title Steamboat Willie of 1928. In fact, it is only freely usable this version of Mickey Mouse (therefore, not the subsequent color versions, which will remain under Disney copyright for a few more years).

The title then refers to the plot of the film, a horror comedy in which Mickey Mouse will transform into a monstrous creature that will terrorize a steamer in New York. For some unfortunate people, a simple late-night boat ride will therefore turn into a desperate fight for survival. Will they be able to escape the murderous creature with a predilection for tourists?

The filming of Steamboat will begin in the next few weeks and the cinema release is scheduled for 2025. It will be distributed in America Iconic Events (Terrifier 2), who declared in the person of President Steven Menkin: «We couldn’t be happier to be part of this fun and terrifying adventure. Being able to allow director Steven LaMorte to show this film in theaters nationwide and bring horror fans into the theater is everything Iconic hopes to represent. We are really happy to collaborate for Screamboat!”.

The director added: «We are working with incredible artists both in front of the camera and behind the scenes to create a horror comedy that is worthy of the big screen. We can’t wait to introduce our killer mouse to the public!”.

Among the artists involved in this “unusual” Mickey Mouse adventure there are for example the animators of Quantum Creation FX, Inc.who created the special effects for Demeter – Dracula’s Awakening And The Book of Boba Fettand the concept artist Christian Cordella (Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: No Way Home), who will draw the killer version of Mickey Mouse.
