Walt Disney Studios released the first official teaser image for Mufasa: The Lion Kingthe prequel to the 2019 version of The Lion King.

In the image you can see a young Mufasa standing on a cliff. There are no other characters in the image, which was shared on social media by The Hollywood Handle and published as part of Disney’s 2024 Annual Meeting of Shareholders.

Mufasa: The Lion King will be directed by Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins, from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson. Krypton star Aaron Pierre will voice Mufasa in the new film, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. will voice Scar, who we can assume will once again be the film’s villain. Not much is known about the film, except that it will tell the story of the origins of Simba’s father.

The words of the director of Mufasa

Barry Jenkins, director of Mufasa

“I grew up with these characters, they mean a lot to me” Jenkins explained in an interview. “I think the work done by Jeff Nathanson, the screenwriter, and going back to really help kids and anyone who loved this IP understand its origins. Kings are not born or made.”

“They have to become who they are through a series of events that many people can relate to. So, from that point of view, it fits very well with all my other work. So I don’t feel any pressure, I just want to do a good job “.
