The regional blood center of Liguria launched an appeal for donations during a press briefing on health that took place on Monday 1 July 2024. Director Vanessa Agostini explained that blood groups B- and AB are mainly needed despite 2023 being characterized by an increase in donations and supplies: “We need to confirm and improve what has been done, paying particular attention to the blood groups that are most lacking”.
Good supplies for groups 0, 0-, A and B while some shortages are also reported for groups A- and AB-. In the first five months of 2024, in fact, a 7.9% drop in donations was recorded compared to the previous year.
As for plasma collection, in the last year there was a 10% growth, but in the last month there was a 2.9% decrease. For this reason, Agostini makes an appeal “to donors and especially apheresis donors for the plasma that we need for self-sufficiency of plasma-derived medicines”. An appeal is also made to platelet donors because Liguria is the region with the highest number of transfusions in relation to its inhabitants.
