Tibre, Lombardy says yes to highway extension

The Lombardy Region has approved the draft memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Emilia-Romagna Region for the completion of the Tibre (Tirreno-Brennero), the motorway link connecting the A15 Cisa motorway and the A22 Brenner motorway through a section shared with the Cremona-Mantua motorway.

The green light came yesterday and the Lombardy councilor for Transport, Claudia Maria Terzi, confirmed that now “a shared path will be started immediately for the extension of the Tibre in the Lombardy territory, strategic not only for the provinces of Cremona and Mantua but for the whole of Lombardy and Northern Italy, in particular for goods. The extension will in fact lighten traffic in the towns by easing the burden on ordinary roads, and will include in the route the construction of a new bridge over the Po, strengthening inter-regional connections”.

Yesterday’s passage is nothing other than the ratification of the memorandum of understanding signed last May with the Emilia-Romagna Region and which has already been sent to the Ministry of Infrastructure, which will be responsible for the final ratification (but Minister Salvini had already declared in recent days that he considered the structure “strategic”). And “I thank the minister – stressed Councilor Terzi just yesterday – for having unblocked the process of an awaited and very important work for the infrastructure of the territories of Cremona and Mantua. Lombardy is ready to provide maximum collaboration to achieve the objective”. Objective, commented a month ago the regional councilor for Infrastructure of Emilia-Romagna Andrea Corsini, “essential for our territory. Now we await the Government’s convocation to the ministry in a time frame that we hope will be rapid to “lay down” the path that will lead to its realization”.

“The Tibre – underlined the councilor Terzi – is also fundamental for the construction of the Cremona-Mantua highway: the two routes will have a common stretch of about 8.5 kilometers between Calvatone and Marcaria. Without forgetting the crucial role of the highway connection within the Tirreno-Brennero multimodal corridor and the European Ten-T network”.

The numbers of Tibre

The Tibre is a motorway link between the A15 and the A1, on one side, and the A22, on the other, with a total length of 85 kilometres, of which 2.35 kilometres are an adaptation of the current route of the A15 motorway, south of the interconnection with the A1 motorway and 82.67 km of new construction, starting in the municipality of Fontevivo and ending in the municipality of Nogarole Rocca, in the province of Verona. The motorway link affects the territorial areas of the Regions of Emilia-Romagna (Province of Parma), Lombardy (Province of Cremona and Mantua) and Veneto (Province of Verona), for 17.5 kilometres in Emilia-Romagna, 52 kilometres in Lombardy and 15.5 kilometres in Veneto.
