Tour de France, Girmay: “This victory is for all Africans”

“Since I started cycling I have always dreamed of winning a stage at the Tour de France, and for me now everything is simply incredible”. The Eritrean Biniam Girmay, 24 years old, says these words without hiding his emotion for what he managed to do at the finish line in Turin, in the third stage that brought the Grande Boucle to the streets of Langa and Roero. A victory that also makes him the third African to succeed in the feat, after the South Africans Daryl Impey and Rob Hunter.

“Thanks to my family, to my wife – says the Intermarché runner again –to all Eritreans, to all Africans, to all those who helped me. Now we are part of this great race. This is also your success, this is your moment”.

Already a stage winner at the Giro d’Italia two years ago, Girmay then reveals that “Our first plan was to work for Thijssen, but then I realized that I was in good shape, so well placed and so, since I was there and in the last kilometer I said to myself that I had to play my cards. It went well, and I still can’t believe it”.
