musica: 26th edition

In the heart of summer, at the beginning of August, in the suggestive historical center of Corinaldo, the notes of great international jazz resound. The 26th edition of Corinaldo Jazz, the festival organized by the Municipality of Corinaldo and the Cultural Association Round Jazz, brings to one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and Orange Flag of the Touring Club, three events of the highest musical level, in the central Piazza Il Terreno. This edition of the festival will be dedicated largely to the celebration of the guitar in modern jazz, with the participation of two masters of this fascinating instrument.

The series will kick off on Thursday, August 1st with Mike Stern, an absolute giant of international jazz-fusion guitar. Considered one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, Mike has the unique ability to play with the finesse and lyricism of Jim Hall, the driving swing of Wes Montgomery and the turbulent and overdriven attack of Jimi Hendrix. Stern revered all three along with blues powerhouses like Albert and BB King. He has released as a soloist and sideman for Miles Davis, Billy Cobham, the Brecker Brothers, Jaco Pastorius, Steps Ahead, David Sanborn, Blood, Sweat. & Tears and Joe Henderson. Stern will share the stage with Randy Brecker, a seasoned jazz veteran, virtuoso trumpet player and prolific composer. Brecker has collaborated with Horace Silver, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Charles Mingus, Clark Terry, Joe Henderson, Duke Pearson, Frank Foster and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Jaco Pastorius, and Frank Zappa. In the realm of jazz-rock fusion, Brecker has been a key player in groups such as Blood Sweat & Tears, Larry Coryell’s Eleventh House, and Dreams, a group he founded with his brother Michael and drummer Billy Cobham. The rest of the band is no slouch either, with Dennis Chambers on drums and Chris Minh Doky on bass. The whole thing is graced by the voice of Leni Stern.

On August 2nd, Friday the festival will continue with Frank Gambale one of the fathers of the modern guitar accompanied by a real All Star Band. Born as a blues guitarist and oriented towards jazz by Chick Corea, Gambale became famous for his participation in the Elektric Band of the great American keyboardist. An artist always open to innovation, Gambale has adopted new techniques and tunings that have distinguished him and become his trademark: the ‘Gambale Technique Sweep Picking’. He continues to inspire generations of musicians who look up to him with respect for his incredible technique and unsurpassed musicality. After having crossed every musical genre – jazz, rock, fusion, acoustic music – the great Australian guitarist returns to Italy with the project “All Star” accompanied by Janos Nagy on keyboards, Dominique Di Piazza on bass, Yoann Schmidt on drums and the voice of Boca Gambale.

Grand finale on Monday 5 August with Kind of Bill, an elegant tribute dedicated to the unforgettable artist Bill Evans. Pianist Dado Moroni has the task of reviving the wonderful melodies of the great Bill, who died prematurely in September 1980, together with bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Joe La Barbera, one of the historic rhythm players who accompanied Evans. Moroni’s intent was fully successful: Evans’ notes remain absolutely alive in this project that aims to celebrate the immortality of his message, his language and his legacy. Kind of Bill is also the title of a song by Joe La Barbera dedicated to the late pianist that perfectly describes the intent of the project strongly desired by Dado Moroni who never hid his love for Evans’ music.

Pre-sales for the three concerts are open online at www.liveticket.it

Also this year Corinaldo Jazz creates a harmonious fusion between the best jazz music and the magic of a perfectly preserved historical village. A moment of great cultural and touristic valorization that aims to develop the Marche hinterland as a slow alternative, rich in artistic proposals, to the crowded cities of the coast.

All concerts will take place in Piazza Il Terreno starting at 9:15 pm and will be followed by the traditional jam session at Ristorante Ai 9 Tarocchi. For information, visit the website www.corinaldojazz.com or the Corinaldo Jazz social pages.
