Sabre, the Italian national team’s pre-Olympic retreat in Champoluc

Among the sixteen fencers there are also Michele Gallo, Luca Curatoli and Luigi Samele, authors of the historic hat-trick at the European Championships

The pre-Olympic retreat of the Italian sabre team in Valle d’Aosta begins today. Until July 5, sixteen sabre fencers will train under the guidance of coach Nicola Zanotti in Champoluc, Ayas, using the eight platforms set up in the “Monterosa Terme” multipurpose hall, before traveling to Paris for the 2024 Olympics, which will begin on July 26. A training session open to the public is also scheduled for July 4, starting at 10:30.

Among the sabre fencers are the protagonists of the historic hat-trick at this year’s European Championships in Basel: Michele Gallo, Luca Curatoli and Luigi Samele, who won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.

“We were welcomed with great enthusiasm – said the technical commissioner Nicola Zanotti – by the community of Val d’Ayas and the entire Valle d’Aosta. Here there are all the conditions to best prepare for the Olympic Games: from the accommodation and training facilities to the climate, everything is functional to our retreat”.

“The pre-Olympic collegiate – comments the regional councilor for Sport, Giulio Grosjacques – is only the first act of the collaboration between the Region and the Italian Fencing Federation. The agreement was presented on the occasion of the Italian Fencing Championships in Cagliari and includes other initiatives that will involve both the athletes of the youth teams and the athletes of the national teams of Sport Fencing after the Olympics”.
