Naples, San Biagio ai Taffettanari cleared of squatters

The apartments of the former rectory adjacent to the historic church of San Biagio ai Taffettanari, in Naples, illegally occupied by families linked to organized crime, were cleared within the deadline established by the judicial authorities on Saturday. The news, made public by the parliamentarian Francesco Emilio Borrelli, is confirmed by sources from the Naples Prosecutor’s Office.

At the end of May, the former rectory of the church, a 16th century jewel in the historic center of Naples, was seized in which some members of the Macor family had found lodging, among whom there are also recipients of precautionary measures and convicted persons. There are seven members of that family unit who are accused by the magistrates of the Cultural Heritage Protection group of the Naples prosecutor’s office (pm Vincenzo Piscitelli, deputy prosecutor Pierpaolo Filippelli) and the Carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Naples of having progressively invaded and occupied, without having any title, the properties of the rectory, even illegally increasing the living area. The case was raised by an investigation by Report.

The former rectory of the church of San Biagio ai Taffettanari, a property of historical and architectural importance, is owned by the Opera Pia of the same name, under the administration of the prefecture of Naples. The crimes contested by the investigators are invasion of land and buildings, construction of illegal construction works and defacement and destination to incompatible uses of cultural assets. The seizure issued by the investigating judge of the Naples court is part of a broad plan to reconnoitre the historical-artistic and architectural heritage of the Neapolitan investigating office, led by the prosecutor Nicola Gratteri, which sees the collaboration of the archaeological, fine arts and landscape superintendency of the Municipality, the Curia and the Federico II University of Naples (Department of Architecture).
