With the arrival of summer and high temperatures, the Police have intensified operations against the illegal sale of mussels, leading to the seizure of over 900 kilos of black mussels and the reporting of five people accused of trading in harmful and poorly preserved foods.

The Borgo Police Department, in collaboration with the ASL of Taranto, conducted targeted checks in the transit areas of vehicles intended for the transport of food. In Viale Cannata, in the Paolo VI district, a van driven by a 39-year-old carrying 300 kg of mussels without traceability and in poor condition was stopped. Shortly afterwards, in the same area, a Fiat Panda with a 60-year-old man with a criminal record at the wheel was found with another 100 kg of irregular mussels.

In the Ponte Punta Penna area, a young man was caught loading 200 kg of irregular mussels onto a van, destined for a fishmonger. Also in via Machiavelli, a 37-year-old was stopped with 200 kg of mussels in poor condition and without suitable documents.

Finally, near the Moscati hospital, a 55-year-old street vendor was found with 120 kg of mussels exposed to the heat and vehicular traffic, stored in a way dangerous to public health.

All the seized goods were destroyed with the help of a compactor.
