Lithuanian citizens present in Sicily and especially in Palermo, are called to gather on the occasion of the national holiday of Lithuania, scheduled for next July 6, in via Annibale 10, starting at 19. An appointment to strengthen cooperation with the Baltic country and give substance to the memoranda of understanding signed since 2009, thanks to the opening of a consulate in Sicily, entrusted to the lawyer Alessandro Palmigiano. On July 6, Laura Sereniene, head of economic affairs of the Lithuanian embassy in Rome, will arrive in Palermo and for the occasion the Sicilian consulate will organize a cocktail for the Lithuanian community and the institutions, businesses and opinion leaders. During the evening, the Lithuanian national anthem will be sung, as part of an initiative, which provides that all citizens scattered around the world sing it simultaneously at 20.00 Italian time and which should be broadcast on Lithuanian TV (for information the community can write to [email protected]).
But the meeting on 6 July is not an isolated event but is part of a rich calendar of meetings. On 14 July, for example, on the occasion of the Santa Rosalia celebration, by virtue of the twinning between the Municipalities of Palermo and Vilnius, the head of international relations of the Municipality of Vilnius, Ausra Brazdauskiene, will be present and will participate in the scheduled events, as a sign of respect and friendship. “These initiatives – says Consul Palmigiano – demonstrate how, over the years, Sicilian and Lithuanian citizens, businesses, operators in the cultural sector and institutions have learned to know and appreciate each other. Constantly working to create job opportunities, collaboration and meeting is what we try to do for the promotion of the country I represent but also for the territory. Celebrating the Lithuanian holiday in Palermo on 6 July is for me a reason for pride and prestige for our city”.
In recent years, relations between Lithuania and Sicily have been increasingly close, with economic-commercial and socio-cultural initiatives. Among these, the twinning between the Municipality of Palermo and Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, an agreement between the Sicilian parliament and the Grand Ducal Palace of Vilnius, loans of works of art between Palazzo Abatellis and the museum of sacred art of Vilnius, and again exhibitions and concerts.
