Schifani’s ordinance stopped the emergency for a weekend. Everything to do again. Two hundred municipalities on the brink of a crisis
The Treatment Plant biological mechanic of the unsorted waste collection of the Sicula Trasporti landfill, in the Coda Volpe district of Lentini, closes again tomorrow. The waste emergency has started again for 200 municipalities in Sicily, including Catania. The judicial administrators of the facility explain that after having restarted the TMB plant on June 26, in application of a provision of the President of the Sicilian Region, who is also commissioner for the waste emergency on the island, it has received the availability for the transfer and the start of the approval procedures from only two of the four landfill management companies cited by the Ordinance, Impianti Srr Ato 4 of Caltanissetta and Catanzaro Costruzioni.
“In consideration of this and the consequent saturation of the spaces available for the storage of the filmed bales of waste Eer 191212 – write the judicial administrators of Sicula Trasporti – the undersigned company will not be able to physically continue the treatment activity, and therefore reception, beyond 02 July 2024 , also reserving the right to limit deliveries as early as July 1st if the safety conditions of the delivery area require it. We urgently request – concludes the document – an inspection visit in order to verify what has been stated by the local control bodies: Arpa Sicilia, Arpa Uos Productive Activities Catania, provincial fire brigade command and ASP of Catania”.
Another tile on the government Schifani, who also has to take the hits from the opposition: “The waste management plant has closed again, leaving more than half of the municipalities in Sicily in a critical situation. This umpteenth closure confirms the inability and failed management of the sector – says the Hon Giuseppe Lombardo, of South calls North – We ask for the immediate resignation of the Regional Councilor for Waste, Di Mauro, and of the Councilor for the Environment, Pagan. Their management as beginners in disarray is the cause of this crisis. Sicilian municipalities cannot be left at the mercy of a plant manager who, due to the complicity of a sick system, continues to negatively influence the waste system in Sicily. President Schifani must draw the consequences of this situation and resign together with his councilors”.
