PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – In Palermo, at the Oncology Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit of the “Paolo Giaccone” Polyclinic, a benign uterine tumor measuring over 10 centimeters in diameter was removed transvaginally using an innovative procedure, performed in very few Italian centers. The operation was performed by Professor Antonio Simone Laganà and his team. “The easiest thing that could have been done in the case of a fibroid of this size – explains Laganà – would have been a traditional surgery, indicated for uteruses with numerous large fibroids. Thanks to the invaluable collaboration and availability of our anesthesiology and nursing staff, we performed the entire procedure laparoscopically and removed the fibroid with a transvaginal extraction technique in an endobag, performed in very few facilities nationwide.
This technique eliminates the need to use the morcellator, a surgical instrument used to remove tissue masses during laparoscopic surgery, with a significant reduction in surgical costs and risks”.
