L’AQUILA – A photo on Facebook reveals the completion of the redevelopment work on Piazza Chiarino, which began in October last year.

Approximately 700 thousand euros, the cost of the intervention, resources pertaining to the Complementary Fund to the Pnrr for the areas hit by the 2009 earthquake and central Italy.

New flooring, new street furniture and new lighting. As already happened for Piazza Regina Margherita and Piazza Duomo, the redevelopment works have generated conflicting opinions on the web on the Facebook group message board ‘L’Aquila and its surroundings before and after’ – photo by Rita Montagliani.

The same Frank Nerilligroup administrator, comments:

Meanwhile, if we had to put benches, it would have been primary to put them with backrests. A seat is especially comfortable for those who are no longer kids! Among other things, those sharp edges of the boxes, positioned at children’s eye level, seem extremely absurd to me! […] Unfortunately it is the total lack of good taste. The city is one thing, another is another!

PRO AGAINST
“Any furnishings are in accordance with the Superintendence of Fine Arts” “They specifically left space for the local tables. The planters and pseudo benches will soon come to a bad end. Ditto the covering. There is no respect or education, therefore…”
“Personally I don’t mind the square as it was built, however the only negative note are those horrible metal “boxes” which are also dangerous for adults and children and then they had dug for more than 1 m. and couldn’t they make small flowerbeds to put a few trees in?” “This is an exemplary way to ruin a square that without greenery is rather sad. But this stunted and approximate greenery is desolate and the benches seem patched up. Those who believe that this arrangement is a prelude to another magnificent one are not entirely wrong given the approximation of the whole.”
“…nice pavement…but parking??? Without parking the residents will never return to live in the city. I don’t know if the “politicians” are really interested in re-inhabiting the center…” “Another square where you won’t be able to make music… Towards 2026”
“As far as I can remember there have never been seats, benches and trees. Now there are seats and they are no good because there is no backrest, edges and counter edges, children who can get hurt, the child gets hurt regardless. Then in this square I have never seen families and elderly people except during the antique market.
Maybe advise those kids who will take possession of it not to deface it as they already did.”
“We had squares that were little gems, very crowded, with trees and greenery, now they are barren without a soul.”
“Anyway, at least the pavement is a little darker than Piazza Regina Margherita, which has become a pigsty.” “Never a suitable design idea, in a medieval city a pseudo-modernist style of benches, corten steel flower boxes from serial stockists on offer”.
“Trees with flowerbeds, 2 or 3 were enough.”
“I respect nature only in small talk, now we will go out with Chinese umbrellas”.
“More car parks removed from the centre, given that the terminal is dangerous, the area of the municipal villa as well, the castle as well, where should you park to be able to take a walk in the centre? Excellent flooring, beautiful flat but usable only for all the various rooms to place outdoor tables. Basically as if it were a seafront but spread across various small squares covered in concrete and stone and without a bit of greenery…the beginning of the end…”.
“Trees, trees not just plants!! That is, plants in flowerbeds are fine but trees are needed, for shade, to mitigate temperatures, for the environment!! It is useless to boast of having planted 1600 new plants if the trees that have been cut are not replaced first and foremost. Roses and bushes are beautiful but a tree is life.”
“This time too, work was carried out without having held a referendum.”
