Calabria, Ciclovia dei Parchi in the EuroVelo7 super itinerary

A firm pedal stroke brought the 545 kilometers from the Parks Cycle Path in Calabria to be part of EuroVelo 7 (also called Ciclovia del Sole), which connects North Cape to Maltawith a route of over 7,650 km that crosses nine European countries. Of these, approximately 2,000 wind through Italian territory from San Candido, in Alto Adige, to Sicily. The initiative starts from FIAB-Italian Federation of the Environment and BicycleNational EuroVelo coordinator in Italy, who together with Calabria Region had proposed his candidacy.

Parks Cycle Route: The route

There Parks Cycle Path was born in 2020 and crosses Calabria from Laino Borgo (CS) a Reggio Calabria traveling along roads with very low traffic volume, through the three national parks of Aspromonte, Sila and Pollino as well as the Serre Regional Natural Park. During the route you will pass through over 60 cities, towns and villages. Completely signposted and equipped with fountains, bike centers, rest areas and hospitality areas, the Parks Cycle Route has had, in these first years, significant growth steps both in services and in infrastructure. But above all it has entered the hearts of cycle tourists for the variety of landscapes and the pleasantness sense of discovery that accompanies the pedaling.

Goals

The EV7-Ciclovia del Sole, of which the Ciclovia dei Parchi is now part, it is one of the 17 itineraries that make up EuroVelothe cycle route network created in 1997 by the ECF-European Cyclists’ Federation with the aim of spreading cycle tourism and active mobility throughout Europe, developing an economic spin-off for the territories and communities touched by the 90,000 km that make up the the entire network of routes distributed in 42 countries.

An extraordinary goal for which we are grateful to ECF and FIAB who was able to enhance the peculiarities of the itinerary”, declared the President of the Calabria Region Roberto Occhiuto. “The integration of the Parks Cycle Route into EuroVelo 7 represents a very important result that rewards the territory and the work carried out by FIAB”, he adds Angelo Fedihead of the FIAB cycle tourism area.
