Appeal process on the railway tragedy of 12 July 2016: Monday morning in the courtroom in Bari

There are a few hours left and then there will be an appeal hearing in Bari to discuss the appeal of the Trani prosecutor’s office regarding the first degree sentence on the train disaster that occurred on 12 July 2016 between Andria and Corato. Appointment Monday 24 June. At the end of the first degree trial, which lasted several years before the Court of Trani, two sentences were sentenced: the station master of Andria, Vito Piccarreta to six years and six months of imprisonment and the conductor of the convoy that went from Andria to Corato Nicola Lorizzo to 7 years in prison. The other 14 defendants and the Ferrotramviaria company accused of the administrative offense were acquitted.

The judges of the Court of Trani essentially ruled that it was only human error while the prosecutor’s office has always maintained that the disaster also occurred due to the fact that adequate investments had not been made for safety systems on the route , due to the lack of staff training and established practices that were contrary to the regulation.

It is precisely from here that the Trani prosecutors wanted to start again to propose the “appeal”. A total of 373 pages which will be discussed just over a year after the first instance sentence arrived on 15 June 2023. There remain 19 civil parties who will be summoned, including the municipalities of Andria, Corato and Ruvo.
