«Stop this barbarism». Today demonstration in the square in Latina for Satnam Singh

The national secretariat of the CGIL will be there and probably also the secretary Maurizio Landini at the demonstration this afternoon at 5pm organized by the CGIL and the FAI CGIL of Latina after the tragic death of Satnam Singh: «We must say no to this barbarism, the time to put a stop to the exploitation of workers”, explains the secretary of the CGIL of Latina Giuseppe Massafra. And in today’s demonstration, in addition to Libera, many political figures will also participate, including the national secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, according to whom «a permanent garrison is needed to reclaim the Pontine countryside from gangmastering, exploitation, starvation wages and infiltration mafia”.

The 5 Star Movement will also take to the streets. «The only response we can give is unanimous and strong, for this reason we will be present at the demonstration organized by the CGIL. We will be there not only to demonstrate solidarity – says the regional coordinator Carlo Colizza – but also to affirm our political commitment in the Region with concrete actions for safety at work and to combat gangmastering”. The regional councilor and commissioner of Action, Alessio D’Amato, will also participate: «I will participate in the event together with a delegation of Action Latina and the parliamentarian Federica Onori. For months I have been asking, with a regional law proposal, for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into illegal work and gangmastering in the southern Pontine area. Tears and the necessary constitution of a civil party are not enough, we need a stronger presence of the institutions and greater controls against exploitation.”
The circles of Sinistra Italiana, Possibile and Europa Verde of Latina have announced that the MEP Ignazio Marino and the Honorable Filiberto Zaratti, of Alleanza Verdi and Sinistra, will also be in the streets.

MEETING IN THE REGION

Meanwhile yesterday morning the round table on safety at work took place urgently convened by the President of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca and the Councilor for Labor Giuseppe Schiboni with the regional and territorial trade union representatives. During the meeting, which lasted approximately two hours, the topic of safety in the workplace was addressed with an increase of 100 units in the number of inspectors on duty at the Spresals. In reference to the tragic death of Satnam Singh, the trade unions highlighted the many problems that concern the world of work, particularly in the province of Latina, and the ways to combat gangmastering. The table concluded with the joint decision to ask for an immediate meeting with the prefect of Latina, in the presence of all the mayors of the province, the employers’ associations and the supervisory bodies to discuss together the most appropriate actions to combat the phenomenon of gangmastering, the social drama faced by many workers, the emergency deaths at work. The request for a meeting with the prefect of Latina will be made by President Rocca and councilor Schiboni in agreement with the union representatives.
