LECCE – The “miracles” of robotic surgery: less than 24 hours of hospitalization after a liver resection operation necessary to eliminate a tumor that had resurfaced. The happy epilogue of what had been bad news has as its protagonist a 78-year-old, who had already undergone surgery for a primary liver tumor in 2019, by the Vito Fazzi General Surgery team directed by Marcello Spampinato and then followed by the doctors of Oncology, directed by Silvana Leo. The recurrence was diagnosed in the routine checks to which all cancer patients are subjected.
The local health authority announced that: «The operation was carried out with the aid of robotic technique: the well-established synergy between anesthetists, surgeons and non-medical personnel ensured that the procedure was carried out without complications and that the patient was able to general conditions so optimal that you can afford to return to your home less than 24 hours after carrying out the operation. At the outpatient check-up, scheduled six days after discharge, the patient reported that he had had no complaints attributable to the surgical results (absence of fever, occasional colic pain managed successfully with over-the-counter painkillers, recovery of normal appetite and usual intestinal habits, surgical wounds in the process of healing correctly), further proof of the benefits linked to the minimally invasive surgical techniques of the Da Vinci robot”.
The robotic platform allows the execution of highly complex oncology surgeries, such as those for liver and pancreatic tumors, through small incisions on the abdomen. This procedure allows the patient a reduced need for analgesics and a faster resumption of daily activities, which leads to a reduction in post-operative hospitalization times, translated into a rapid return to daily life and therefore reduced costs both social and borne by the hospital structure .
A technique has decided to focus on ASL Lecce, so much so that robotic surgery is also “appearing” in Scorrano, investing 5,002,599.60 euros to upgrade the equipment of the operating rooms. Until now only “Vito Fazzi” had the possibility of carrying out surgical operations with this instrumentation which gives the possibility of intervening in a minimally invasive way compared to traditional surgery. Robotic surgery gives advantages to both the doctor and the patient who during the operation will have less bleeding, a shorter hospital stay, less post-operative pain.
