Art and neuroscience, ‘Memory and emotions’ in Lecce

The Convitto Palmieri in Lecce will host tonight, at 7.30 pm, a new appointment of the “Coffee Talk, Art & Neuroscience” organized by the Institute for Biomedical Research and Innovation of the National Research Council Messina (Cnr-IRIB) and included in the XVII edition of Festival of creative expression and authentic beauty “Pe(n)sadifferent”. Located in the heart of Lecce, the Convitto Palmieri is a former monastery from the 1500s, today one of the most important cultural spaces in the city. The “Coffee Talk, Art & Neuroscience” is an innovative format of scientific dissemination, where art and neuroscience come together in stimulating and accessible dialogues. This format stands out for the approach aimed at the general public with which science is presented, making complex issues accessible to everyone. The meetings are designed to involve the public in an open and informal conversation, sipping a coffee and letting themselves be transported by the beauty of art and the wonder of neuroscientific discoveries.

Specifically, today’s event “Memory and Emotions: Science and Models in action” is “aimed at exploring the role of the hippocampus in the human brain, with particular attention to its mechanisms and functions through the use of computational models advanced. Emotions play a fundamental role in the formation of our memories, influencing our ability to store and retrieve information. When we experience strong emotions, positive or negative, our memories tend to be more vivid and long-lasting. experience can color and shape how we remember it, amplifying certain details and influencing our overall perception of the event. It is important to consider how our emotions can affect our memories, as this can have a significant impact on our emotional well-being and on our interactions with others. During the event, physicist Rosanna Migliore of the Biophysics Institute of the National Research Council will present the fascinating results of research conducted on simulations of single neurons and neural networks, focusing mainly on the hippocampus”.

Together with her, the psychologist Valerio Santangelo of the University of Perugia will explain the neural processes linked to memory and emotions, with a special focus on the hippocampus and its mechanisms, also in reference to rare individuals with hyperthymesia (hyperthymesic syndrome it is a condition in which the individual possesses a superior autobiographical memory, such as to allow the memory of most of the events experienced in one’s existence). An intriguing combination of art and neuroscience that promises to reveal new perspectives on understanding the functioning of the human brain. The evening will be enlivened by the art of the Apulian world music duo composed of Bruno Galeone (accordion and piano) and Daria Falco (voice and frame drums) who will lead guests on a wonderful journey around the world.
