He is a citizen who has been under observation at emergency room of the Anzio hospital to tell of the immense hardship experienced by the local health facility and the staff on duty, who are starting to face the summer with several fewer nurses than in recent months (it seems like you are among those who have decided to change headquarters and retire and no one has been replaced) while there are no reinforcements arriving.
And even covering work shifts is becoming a very serious problem. All this while, in recent days, in just a few hours a man injured in an accident, a person injured with a knife, three people who risked drowning in the sea of Nettuno arrived in the emergency room, as we reported in in the local news these days. A series of very serious emergencies that left the staff exhausted.
While summer emergencies are already in full swing and every weekend is a drama that constantly involves healthcare personnel, there is a lack of nurses and health professionals to guarantee the service, obviously and above all to the detriment of less serious cases, destined for very long waits.
The situation is dramatic.
“I found myself in hospital for a chronic problem – a citizen tells us – and I heard the staff talking. It took them much longer than usual to do the routine work and when I pointed it out they told me that the staff is limited, that it is difficult to cover shifts because several people are no longer there and have not been replaced. That the situation has been reported countless times to the ASL and at the moment a solution has not been found. An absurd situation. While I was in hospital there were people who had worked double shifts and overtime and were devastated. I am incredulous as a citizen that a hospital that serves two seaside towns should be treated this way. If solutions are not found, the nurses who work in the emergency room will also leave because they cannot work at this pace. Obviously – concludes the citizen – the other departments are also short of staff, but while in a department if there are no nurses the beds are reduced, with emergencies this cannot be done, one cannot refuse to help an emergency even if the staff is collapsing. The fear is that in such a situation the ASL cannot guarantee the service. It’s unacceptable. While I was observing it was evident that even taking shifts was becoming a real challenge.”
On the situation of the Anzio emergency room we contacted the local health authority for a position, with the awareness that even if new hires arrived the situation, in view of the summer, would still be critical because reinforcements are needed and not just the maintenance of the level minimum employment, which has been photographing a situation that has been inadequate for users for some time. Without forgetting that nurses also have the right to well-deserved holidays and that the Local Health Authority should have already been extensively organized to deal with this situation.
