New nocturnal assault on an ATM, detonated with the classic “marmot technique”. It happened in Bitonto, where a commando composed of at least four people carried out a theft against the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena branch in Corso Vittorio Emanuele, a short distance from Palazzo di Città.
According to an initial reconstruction, bandits with covered faces and dressed in mechanic’s overalls went into action, arriving in a gray sedan. Once they reached the credit institution, they stopped the car in the center of the road and blew up the ATM, after inserting a homemade bomb into the slot from which the banknotes are dispensed.
While the money was being transported to the car inside some plastic bags, one of the accomplices, armed with a pickaxe, chased away some officers from a security company who had intervened following the explosion.
The entire scene was also filmed with a mobile phone by one of the residents of the area, with the video being spread on social media.
Once the heist had been carried out, the gang quickly drove away in a car, leaving three-pointed nails and a large boulder on the road to help them escape. The Carabinieri intervened on site and started investigations into the incident. The footage recorded by the video surveillance cameras present in the area is being examined.
The exact amount of loot taken away by the bandits has yet to be quantified, which would be around 50 thousand euros. The damage to the bank branch was extensive.
