They robbed bathers and tourists on the beaches of Quartu, Villasimius and Castiadas: a gang of car mice defeated

They robbed tourists on the south-eastern coast of Sardinia. Gang of three people in handcuffs. With the start of the summer season, the south of Sardinia is filled with tourists from all over the world. Unfortunately, not only the sea awaits them, but also well-organised gangs of thieves who clean up parked vehicles, preferring the most famous beaches along the coast from Quartu Sant’Elena to Villasimius, from Castiadas to Muravera up to Villaputzu. .

There are countless complaints collected by the Carabinieri of the San Vito Company, who studied the thieves’ modus operandi and concentrated their forces to identify the culprits. After having viewed hours of footage from surveillance cameras, listened to testimonies and analyzed the reports of alarmed citizens, finally, yesterday evening, these efforts led to a first important result: the arrest of a gang made up of two brothers and the cousin.

The first theft report of the day kicked off the operation. Confirmations on the suspicions came from the Carabinieri of the Muravera station who recovered the images from the nearby cameras, identifying a Peugeot 208, the last vehicle used by the thieves. From that moment on, a real manhunt began in which all the available soldiers took part, with patrols in uniform and plain clothes which were coordinated by the Company Commander to identify the movements of the suspicious car which was seen heading towards towards Cagliari on the SS 125 var.

The vehicle was blocked shortly afterwards by the San Vito Radiomobile Carabinieri. There were three individuals on board, all already known to the police force for the same type of crime: a 23-year-old young man, born in Turin, resident in Quartu, a 40-year-old man, born in Bosnia-Herzegovina, resident in Cagliari, and another young man aged 25, also born in Turin and resident in Quartu. From checking the documents it was discovered that the car was rented, probably to be able to replace it often with a different model. The immediate search made it possible to find, in addition to break-in tools, clearly intended for forcing the locks of parked vehicles, cameras, tablets, several pairs of branded shoes, bottles of perfume, various fine clothing and cash in euros, Czech crowns and Swiss francs, clear evidence of the criminal activities of the three men.

But this evidence was still not enough to close the circle, in fact in order to prosecute those responsible for a theft it is necessary for the authorities to have collected the victims’ reports. So the rest of the night was used by the military to reconstruct the events, catalog and compare the stolen goods with the reports already filed, recover the unfortunate people, who perhaps did not yet know they had been robbed, and collect all the evidence. Part of the stolen goods has already been recognized by some tourists, allowing it to be linked to at least three thefts perpetrated during the day and the reports of the unfortunate people have made it possible to arrest the three men, who are now in prison in Uta awaiting the decisions of the judiciary.

The surveillance cameras played a fundamental role, providing the elements to identify the vehicle used by the thieves, just as the collaboration between the police and the local community was essential to gather information and respond quickly to the emergency.

The operation represented a significant blow against criminal gangs operating along the southern coast of Sardinia.
