PADUA – At the Psychology citadel in via Venezia they will remember him as one of the founders of the subject at Bo. Luciano Arcuri, a luminary of social psychology, passed away on Thursday morning at the Santi Giovanni e Paolo hospital in Venice at the age of 83. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for some time.

These are therefore days of mourning in the Psychology classrooms of Bo, where Arcuri dedicated his passion to that discipline which he was among the first to bring to the city, always remaining a promoter of an approach to psychology that does not neglect pragmaticism. «We remember Arcuri as one of the most important references for social psychology in Padua – says Alessandra Simonelli, director of the Department of Developmental and Socialization Psychology – I remember that he helped me in my desire to return to the city after my experience as a researcher in Bologna. Arcuri has set the example for our discipline, his students can be found in the most important universities in Italy and around the world.”
In his career Arcuri has developed issues such as the measurement of attitudes, social cognition, group dynamics, the construction of prejudices and stereotypes and the role of implicit components in social judgment: all topics that are still very relevant today. In recent years he has been interested in the psychological effects that the mass media have on public opinion. Alongside research, Arcuri has held many institutional roles: in Padua between 1994 and 2002 he was delegate for Orientation and from 2002 to 2005 director of the Department of Developmental and Social Psychology. He was a member of the executive committee of the Association of European Social Psychologists and then president of the “Social Cognition” project of the European University Association. He leaves behind his wife Maria Vittoria and his son Alessandro. Tuesday the altarpiece at Palazzo Bo.
