Lake Bomba Reserve, the proposed law of the Pact for Abruzzo

Tourism, sustainable development, valorisation and protection of the territory, local economies and ecological transition. All in a single regional law proposal that establishes the Lago di Bomba Nature Reserve, in the municipalities of Atessa, Bomba, Colledimezzo, Pennadomo, Pietraferrazzana, Monteferrante and Villa Santa Maria. The initiative is supported and signed by the entire group Pact for Abruzzowhich makes up the opposition in the Regional Council, and is put in black and white in the legislative proposal which bears the first signature of Alessio Monaco (AVS).

The text was presented this morning in a press conference on the shores of the lake in the municipality of Colledimezzo, in which the regional councilors took part Alessio Monaco, Antonio Blasioli, Vincenzo Menna, Silvio Paolucci, Antonio Di Marco, Francesco Taglieri and the Group Leader Luciano D’Amico, and all the mayors of the seven municipalities involved.

“We wanted to present this initiative to all the men and women of Abruzzo, right on the shores of the lake – he explains D’Amico – because these places must return to the center of attention and political debate. And they must do so through the search for a development model that is based on respect for the environment, on sustainability, on the valorization of the territory and the protection of the natural heritage, which makes our land that Green Region of Europe which in Italy represents a unique. The objective is to generate value, enriching the territory with investments that bring long-term benefits, thanks to resources such as Lake Bomba which cannot be relocated and which, if adequately valorised, can become a certain, inexhaustible and from a green perspective to the future of our region and this territory. With this initiative we therefore clearly reject the vision, or rather the non-vision, of those who want to extract value, and not generate it, impoverishing territories that in the rest of the world would be the object of extreme care due to their enormous potential”.

Councilor Alessio explained the details of the proposed law Monk “The regional nature reserve Bomba Lake has the aim of conserving highly natural areas and existing landscape characteristics; to safeguard the lake water resource, as well as promote ecosystem services, protecting the traditional activities of local populations. The boundaries of the reserve do not involve the inhabited centers of the municipalities, but insist on the appurtenances of the water basin and its banks. To accompany the proposal we have presented a detailed map which clearly identifies the hectares involved and the boundaries.

The total extension of the Reserve will be approximately 945 ha, divided as follows:

Municipality of Atessa 50 ha;

Municipality of Bomba 310 ha;

Municipality of Colledimezzo 100 ha;

Municipality of Monteferrante 4 ha;

Municipality of Pennadomo 126 ha;

Municipality of Pietraferrazzana 55 ha;

Municipality of Villa Santa Maria 300 ha.

We wanted to involve, right from the genesis of the project, the mayors of the municipalities involved – present today at the Press Conference – so that this initiative represents an opportunity for growth for the entire community”.

The regional councilors then underlined how the Lake Bomba area is characterized by the presence of a high number of tourist and naturalistic sites of interest. For decades the area has been the subject of a considerable flow of visitors, also thanks to the presence of accommodation facilities that surrounded the lake, creating economy and hospitality in the area. Today, however, those activities have ceased also due to the lack of a strategic vision and targeted investments by the Abruzzo Region across the entire territory. A lack that has had serious repercussions on employment and the local economy, resulting in a high rate of depopulation. The proposed law presented today restores the appropriate green, tourist and naturalistic vocation of the water basin and safeguards it from speculation that conflicts with this vocation.
