day of studies at Santo Spirito

On Thursday 13 June, from 9am to 1pm in the chapter house of the former monastery of Santo Spirito in Agrigento, the day of studies entitled “The architectural cultural heritage: strategic resource of the territory – The Chiaramonte complex of Santo Spirito in Agrigento is scheduled: studies and proposals”.

Event organized to present the educational results of the students of the architectural restoration laboratory in the course of architecture and building design studies of the architecture department of the University of Palermo based at the territorial university center of Agrigento chaired by Gianfranco Tuzzolino. The Santo Spirito complex is a monument of exceptional historical-architectural value, a leading work in the wider field of medieval architecture, so-called “Chiaramontana”, because it was inspired and desired by the powerful Chiaramonte family and of which many testimonies remain throughout the Sicily and, above all, in the province of Agrigento.

The day, moderated by Professor Valeria Scavone, coordinator of the course of studies, will be an opportunity to reflect on the main architectural and stylistic qualities of the complex, on its state of conservation, but also on its potential for use and valorisation which could contribute to as an important driving force for the recovery of the part of the historic center in which it is located and in which the restoration of the former hospital of San Giovanni di Dio on Via Atenea is already being completed, again by the University of Palermo and whose works will be presented by engineer Antonio Sorce of the technical office of the University of Palermo.

In addition to the Superintendence who will describe the past and ongoing restoration interventions, the mayor of Agrigento Francesco Miccichè and the culture councilor of the Municipality of Agrigento Costantino Ciulla will speak; the prefect of Agrigento Filippo Romano and Giuseppe Montana for the Ministry of the Interior; Don Giuseppe Pontillo of the Archdiocese of Agrigento; Giuseppe Parello, director of the Salinas archaeological museum in Palermo and the architect Rino La Mendola for the Order of Architects of Agrigento.

The works will be exhibited by the students of the course of studies under the guidance of the owner of the laboratory, Renata Prescia, with Fabio Zarbo and Alessia Cilona to present Loredana Lentini’s degree thesis on the former trachomatosarium of Agrigento, built in what was the vegetable garden of the monastery and today abandoned.

With this initiative, the University of Palermo once again demonstrates its commitment to the territory in which it works and offers young students an opportunity to feel involved in the community in which they live, study and in which, it is hoped, they can work thanks to the acquired skills.

The students involved in the project are Flavia Crapanzano, Antonio Farruggia, Giovanni Manganello, Sophia Mazza, Paola Pupella, Alba Ettari, Giuseppe Fiorentino, Salvo Indelicato, Giulia Iacona, Federica Marchese Ragona, Maria Mazza, Ilenia Moscatello.
