Cycling along Via Roma, between promises and dangers

Palermo – An unknown where danger is just around the corner. Between broken manholes, potholes and depressions, Via Roma certainly cannot be defined as a safe road for those who choose to ride a bike every day. It is certainly not the discovery of hot water as the road conditions are well known to everyone. But not only cyclists, given that motorcyclists are also exposed to danger, but also pedestrians who have to cross the road.

But sustainable mobility must be supported, certainly not with promises given that to date the Municipal Administration has limited itself only to announcing new cycle routes, 30 zones and the famous 30 saving traffic policemen. But there are no funds either to redo the road surface or for a new cycle path. As well as the alleged renewal of the Bicycle Council, whose act seems to be blocked in the eighth lane of Ponte Corleone.

Except then to remain indifferent to the transit of motorbikes packed with people, horse-drawn carriages, and vehicles for unloading goods which now pass at any time. As well as the volunteers of the Carabinieri and Police associations who pass along via Maqueda and via V. Emanuele, but who limit themselves to getting people off their bicycles. When cars circulating undisturbed along the Cassaro or vans going the wrong way are noticed, they spread their arms.

Can the first busiest city in Italy afford all this?

In a recent visit to New York last April, Mayor La Galla declared “The city’s experiences in the field of urban regeneration, sustainable mobility and educational policies should be put to good use”

All that remains is to wish you a good viewing by drawing your legitimate reflections and conclusions, knowing that every day along Via Roma there is a risk.
