Mycobacteriosis in Tuscany, Aou Sienese protagonist at the first regional workshop held in Florence. Mycobacteriological diagnosis, old and new therapeutic options, role of pneumology and radiology in the management of mycobacteriosis. These were the main topics covered in the first regional workshop on mycobacteriosis in Tuscanywhich was held at Villa la Quiete in Florence, home of FORMAS, the regional laboratory for healthcare training.

The event, sponsored by SIMIT, the Italian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases and Stop TB Italia, saw the participation of experts and professionals from across the Tuscany region. An important role was played bySiena hospital-university companywith the participation of Professor Mario Tumbarello, regional president of SIMIT and director of Infectious and Tropical Diseases, and Dr. Michele Trezzi, one of the scientific directors of the workshop and doctor of Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the Aou Senese.

«This type of meeting – says the professor Mario Tumbarello of the Aou Senese on the meeting in Tuscany – are particularly important for a comparison between professionals on the diagnoses and therapies concerning mycobacteriosis. We must consider that among the mycobacterioses there are also non-tuberculous ones, rare and serious infections that mainly affect individuals over 50 years of age, in particular those with HIV infection, those suffering from cystic fibrosis or lung diseases such as chronic bronchopneumopathy obstructive disease (COPD) and those undergoing immunosuppressive therapies. Strong awareness is also necessary – concludes Tumbarello – at an institutional level, non-tuberculous mycobacteriosis is not included in the essential levels of care, nor in the list of rare diseases».

The workshop on mycobacteriosis in Tuscany saw important interventions, including that of the professor Giuseppina Ciarleglio of Respiratory System Diseases of the Aou Senese on the screening and follow-up of patients with bronchiectasis, with sessions dedicated to tuberculosis and non-tuberculous diseases, as well as interactive discussions and presentations of clinical cases by specialists and young pulmonology researchers and infectious disease specialists, including for the Aou Senese the doctors Alessandra Bailoni and Arianna Lippi of infectious diseases and the doctor Giusy Montuori of respiratory diseases.

«It was particularly appreciated – adds the doctor Michele Trezzi – the final round table, where professionals from all the infectious diseases operational units in Tuscany discussed the management realities of mycobacteriosis in their respective structures, developing proposals for improvement to be proposed at a regional level. The workshop – concludes Trezzi – was an important step forward in the fight against mycobacteriosis in Tuscany, having favored the exchange of knowledge and the adoption of new therapeutic strategies, and promoting the strengthening of the network of professionals present in our area for many years. region”.
