Pitella’s sensational regional contribution to the European vote did not change the outcome of the match for Calenda who lost the chance to send his men to Europe. Same thing for Renzi who gathered support in Basilicata, but the results were useless at the end of the fair. The elimination of the two centrist groupings in the European elections poses the big problem of their position in the internal Italian panorama. Having started out arousing great hopes, to the point of suggesting a double-digit debut, the Renzi Calenda pact could not withstand the internal pressure brought by the Florentine leader, with his eagerness to spend every day on the head of some friend. The result is that this position of collecting votes without a choice of side does not bring good results and it is time for the two to truly understand that it is essential to return to playing in the centre-left field, in which they can worthily represent the moderate wing. Also because Conte’s unrealism has proven to be a loser in the comparison with the Democratic Party and now he must choose whether to become one of the pillars of the coalition or to follow the path of radical yet unproductive political adventurism. The personal opposition between Meloni and Schlein favored both, legitimizing their leadership in government and opposition respectively. But all in all Schlein is a winner on one specific point. and that is on the approval by the electorate of the choice to renew the party, removing the chair from the backs of the notables and making room for new recruits. The progressive but constant rise of Alleanza Verdi Sinistra is interesting and has now become the point of reference for environmentalist reformism and a left that knows how to interpret the great battles of Italian society. Even if in Basilicata this party needs to get its act together because there is a left which at the moment is lacking, as demonstrated by the vote on Santoro and Ruotolo, which explains the Lucanian result which is below the national average. In short, in this European vote there is a precise indication of a march towards a more mature bipolarism that can truly catalyze the interest of voters.
