European and administrative elections in the province of Catania: turnout

CATANIA – Without infamyin a context in which certainly no one can celebrate, and without praise. The data of theturnout at 7pm in the province of Cataniaboth for European elections both for the 2024 local elections, do not convey an image of affection for the vote. But they are not even worse than other Sicilian territories.

With the 27.49 percent of turnout recorded at 7pm on 9 June 2024, the second and last day of voting, the province of Catania is the fourth of the nine provinces Sicilian elections for eligible voters who went to the polls.

The highest percentages

As expected, the municipalities where the highest percentages of voters were recorded are also those where voting was also held for the election of the mayor and for the renewal of the municipal council. TO Ragalna 62.48 percent of those entitled to vote went to vote; to Motta Sant’Anastasia 58.12; in Zafferana Etnea 54.56; to Aci Castello 52.97 percent.

These are the only municipalities where, according to the 7pm data, the threshold of half of the voters going to the polls was exceeded. In Catania city the voters stopped at 24.61 percent. Not even a third of the people of Catania, therefore, at least so far, have decided to express a preference for the renewal of the European Parliament.

The lowest turnout

However, the lowest percentage of participation in the European vote is not that of the provincial capital: a Mineoin Calatino, only the 15.95 percent of voters; to Mazzarrone 18.63; to Castiglione di SiciliaMunicipality dissolved due to mafia, il 18.94 percent.

Administrative data

The turnout data for the local elections are also not positive. In all four municipalities called to vote for the municipal elections, turnout was significantly lower than in the previous round.

TO Ragalnawith its 61.11 percent of voters going to vote (i.e. 2,220 people), the decrease compared to previous administrative elections is 12.67 percentage points.

TO Zafferana Etnea 4,455 people put their ballots in the ballot box, equal to 53 percent of those entitled to vote. At the last round at 7pm they were 65.60 percent.

TO Motta Sant’Anastasia it goes slightly better: 56.42 percent (5,707 voters) against 64.99 percent. Finally, voter turnout fell by only 6.9 percentage points Aci Castello: 51.51 percent in 2024 (8,301 voters) against 58.41 percent five years ago.
