I dream of having rights…“. This is the title of the very harsh outburst of a town in Reggio Calabria, Maria Nocitowhich ironically signs itself “new pedestrian sportswoman” after the adventure we had today. “In the hope of being able to fulfill the so-called right to vote, on a sunny afternoon I decide to undertake what will prove to be an adventure more than a right/duty…” begins the lady.

I go to the Pythagoras school where the polling station is located, on foot since I don’t drive and unfortunately the gates are closed… Oops and now?… perhaps the heat has mistakenly made me misunderstand?… I wanted to vote on a Saturday afternoon!… but little by little I discover that I am not the only unfortunate one… I was in good company… and off we went with the phone calls: municipal offices not even talking about it, stopped in the middle of the road among the questions of those present, all that remains is the phone call to the good friend on duty, who I obviously thank publicly, who tries to let me know that since the school has been unusable for some time now, the polling station has been moved elsewhere… another location, another 2 km or so under the sun on foot…

Certain, – the letter continues – I could thank the Mayor because perhaps he was thinking of a fitness program associated with the European elections… uhmmm… I could thank him for making me burn 207 kcal… uhmmm… I would instead like to point out to him that a citizen pays taxes to have services which in this city are now have become a chimera… are you aware, Mayor, for example, that you should notice a change in the electoral section with the famous adhesive slips that are sent home a little earlier?!… are you aware, Mayor, that there are elderly or disadvantaged people who do not have really all this desire to walk for miles to find the coveted polling station?!… at this point I must add that the inefficiencies in this city, now last in terms of liveability, last in everything, are growing and multiplying in primary schools and daily actions…”

“Mayor please take note – concludes the lady – that if discontent increases and does not decrease, you should work and change your strategy, assuming that you have ever had a program strategically suited to our city.

Maria Nocito
